Isegoria is an independent publication covering Australian politics, policy, and public life. We report on what the established press will not, in the conviction that a free people are entitled to a smaller state, a lighter hand, and a government that answers to them rather than to itself.
The political class has grown comfortable. We intend to make it less so.
Taxes rise, the state expands, and the institutions that were meant to serve the public increasingly serve themselves. Most of it unfolds with little scrutiny and is reported, if at all, only once the bill has fallen due and nothing can be done about it.
Isegoria exists to close that gap: to follow the money, question the comfortable, and explain plainly what is being done in the public's name, and at the public's expense.
Journalism is never free of perspective. Ours is honest about its own.
We do not pretend to write from nowhere, nor do we share the assumptions of a press corps that treats an ever-larger government as the natural answer to every problem. Our reporting proceeds from older and sturdier convictions: that the individual and the family come before the state, that enterprise and effort are to be rewarded rather than penalised, and that a nation is entitled to govern itself.
That perspective shapes the questions we ask. It does not excuse us from the facts. We aim to be accurate first and fair throughout, and to make the case for liberty on the strength of the evidence.
Isegoria (ἰσηγορία) is an ancient Greek principle: the equal right of every citizen to stand and speak in the public square.
A free press is the modern public square: the place where power is questioned and the ordinary citizen is heard above the activist, the lobbyist, and the well-connected. At a time when plain opinions are policed and dissent is treated as a danger, that ancient principle demands renewed defence.
